Spanish Goat
The Spanish goat came originally from Spain via Mexico to the USA. It is now a meat type goat found primarily on or around the Edwards Plateau of Central Texas. The Spanish goat has the ability to breed out of season and is an excellent range animal because of its small udder and teats. In addition, Spanish goats are usually characterized as being very hardy, able to survive and thrive under adverse agroclimatic conditions with only limited management inputs. Boer Goats
The Boer goat was developed in South Africain the early 1900s for meat production. Their name is derived from the Dutch word "Boer" meaning farmer. The Boer goat was probably bred from the indigenous goats of the Namaqua Bushmenand the Bantu tribes, with some crossing of  Indian and Erupuean Bloodlines being possible. They were selected for meat rather than milk production; due to selective breeding and improvement, the Boer goat has a fast growth rate and excellent carcass qualities, making it one of the most popular breeds of meat goat in the world. Boer goats have a high resistance to disease and adapt well to hot, dry semi-deserts. U.S. production is centered in western Texas. (Courtsey of Wikipedia)

Nubian Goats
The Anglo-Nubian breed originated in England as a cross between the Old English Milch Goat and the Zariby and Nubian bucks imported from India, Russia, and Egypt. (Courtsey of Wikipedia)

Cross breeding
While purebred  bucks are usually preferred for breeding purposes, it is common to use crossbreed does for kid production, with the resulting offspring being 7/8 or more Boer. Common crosses are Boer x Spanish goat,  Boer x Kiko goat, and Boer x Nubian goat. (Courtsey Wikipedia)

Production at LSR
Our objective at LSR Meat Goats, is to provide high quality cross bred meat goats to the Central North Texas region. Our stock is comprised of Spanish/Boer/Nubian influences. The Spanish influence provides for a goat which is disease resisitant, well adjusted for a variety of forages and provides a suitable meat quailty. The Boer influence has shown to enhance hybrid vigor and a market ready kid in a reduced timeframe allowing for greater profitability. The Nubian influence provides for better milk performance resulting in greater kid growth and retention. We will continue to update this website posting genetic/performance records and observations as they become available.
